Guest Blogger: “WATW” Kath’s 10 Must Haves

Kath’s (Founder of What Are They Wearing) personal “must-haves”

10 – Foldable Duffle For Travel:

I’m originally from Toronto, Canada and I love to travel so I’m forever flying out of LAX. My favored carry-on is the “Longchamp Le Pilage Duffel Bag”.  It folds up for easy storage, but when you’re in need it’s roomy and chic. It doubles as a great weekender, or gym bag too.

9 – An Unexpected Scarf:

Last winter I bought this red (“shokpink”) neck warmer by Michael Kors. It instantly became part of my daily uniform. I constantly wear scarves, but I think there’s something unexpected about the unique shape, and the gold buttons that makes it pop. I liked it so much that I immediately bought two more in gold and army green (“camel” and “loden”). I layer them with others scarves when back in East, or wear them solo in LA. I get complements everywhere I go.

8 – My Go-Everywhere, Fit Everything Everyday Bag:

Running a website, I’m constantly carrying my life with me wherever I go – and by life, namely I mean my laptop. I love designer handbags and admit to having a few, but I hate to ruin their structure by treating them as an everyday suitcase. So my go-everywhere bag is by a Montreal based Canadian company: mo851 (formerly know as “Rugby North America”). They have stores worldwide; it’s the best leather anywhere. There are no logos or branding, they have classic and gorgeous pieces that truly go with everything. I have too many pieces to admit to, but their “Weekend Bag” in black and “med gray” are two of my mainstays (Kate Hudson wore the black on the back of Matthew McConaughey’s motorcycle in 2003’s “How to Lose A Guy in 10 Days”). They come in small and medium, both are great for travel.

7– Signature Polish:

Part of a woman’s signature style, is her signature polish. While some of the most stylish women I know stick to pink and neutral nails, I lean towards color. Lately my fingers are rarely seen without Chanel’s “505 Particulière”. Similar hues are OPI’s “You Don’t Know Jacques”, and Essie’s “Chinchill”. Taupes and grays are popular with celebs Rachel Bilson, Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Hudson and Gwyneth Paltrow. On my toes I wear Chanel’s “461 Blue Satin”, a dark navy that almost looks black, but gives off a slight shimmer. OPI’s “Russian Navy”, and “Lincoln Park At Midnight” are similar. When I want to mix things up, I love Dolce & Gabbana’s “Royal” on my fingers or toes. Their polish is incredible, it’s made from car paint and it DOES NOT CHIP. The best-kept beauty secret is Chanel’s “Extreme Shine Nail Lacquer” topcoat; it keeps your nails looking dewy and wet for days.

6 – Lace Cami:

Most women have discovered Hanky Panky’s lace thongs, but not everyone knows about their “sheer lace camisoles”. I wear my black, white, granite, ivory, or “chai” daily. They’re so versatile; you can wear them under a sheer blouse, a low-cut top, or anything you want to add a pop of lace to. I styled someone to wear one under a fancy black dress to a wedding, giving her décollage a sexy splash. There are countless colors and styles (fullback, racerback, lined, unlined, bralettes) – you can’t go wrong.

5 – Statement Watch

I’m obsessed with statement watches, or “high-impact” as they’re also called. I rotate between my “Michael Kors ‘Goldtone Oversize Iconic Chronograph Watch”, and white and black ceramics.  I rarely leave home without one, and I rarely come home without at least one complement. Of all the things I’ve ever owned, my oversized gold watch has rendered the most complements. It’s often mistaken for a Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Victoria Beckham, Renee Zelleweger style Rolex, at a fraction of the price. I wear it layering with bracelets (often Vita Fede), or solo as it’s a bracelet in it’s own right.

4 – Nude Pumps:

Nude pumps are so flattering against nude skin. The seamless transition from your foot to your shoe flatters and elongates your legs. My current favorite nudes are Christian Loubtoutin’s “Simple 70 Leather Pumps. I met Mr. Louboutin at his Robertson Boutique here in LA and he signed one of the soles. I’ll keep them forever!!

3  – Go Everywhere Pouch

I carry my life: wallet, keys, blackberry, business cards, hand cream and lip glosses in one small pouch that goes with me everywhere. When changing bags, I simply move this staple from one bag to another to avoid forgetting something. Right now I’m using celeb fav Rebecca Minkoff’s “Mac Clutch” in black. It has a chain strap that can be added when I want to use it as it’s own bag, and removed when I want a standalone clutch or pouch. Reese Witherspoon carries hers all over Brentwood.

2 – Wear-Everywhere, Go-With-Everything Patent Flats

I live in ballet flats during the day, and right now I can be found in Tory Burch “Eddie Patent Ballet Flats” in patent “smog”. Gray is huge this fall and I can’t get enough. These ballerinas go with everything and they’re so comfortable. I’ll often carry heels in my bag (or in my car) and change into them whenever warranted.

1 – Black Skinny Jeans:

I live in J Brand 12” Pencil Leg Black skinny jeans. I have a theory that all jeans can be categorized as “snuggers” or “spreaders”, depending on the weight of the denim and how flattering the cut wears. J Brand jeans snug, their styles are incredibly forgiving. I prefer a 12” leg opening, and I alternate between exposed gold stitching, or black on black. Black skinnies are my go-to black pants. I wear them out with embellished tops; funked up with a leather jacket or faux fur; or as a day-time suit with a boyfriend, schoolboy or shrunken blazer. They are my uniform.
